What Is a Network?

computer network

A Network consists of two or more nodes that are linked with one another in order to communicate or share data through different media such as cables, optic wires, or wireless media such as WIFI, 3G, and 4G, etc. in a networking environment.

Networking Devices

There are range of Networking devices used in networks apart from transmission links manufactured by many different vendors such as Cisco, Huawei, Juniper and more. These are

  • Routers

A Router is a computer networking device that forwards data packets between networks by processing the information included in the packet or datagram. It is at least connected with two networks to forward the data. It used forwarding tables to determine and chose the best path. Routers store their routing information in their header. They use multiple protocols such as ICMP, RIP, OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Routing Gateway Protocol), EGP (Exterior Gateway Protocol), etc.

  • Switches

A switch is a networking device that connects different computer networking devices by using packet switching to receive and forward data. It is also called a switch Hub. Switch uses MAC (Media Access Control) table to store the MAC address. Switch has multiport that uses MAC tables to forward and receive data from other devices. Switch works on Layer there but there are layer 3 switches also available to work9 on layer 3.

  • Network Interfaces

Inter linkingA Network Interface Controller (NIC) is also called an Ethernet card is computer hardware device that connects a computer to a network with the capability to access the transmission media, and can process low-level network information. For example, the NIC may have a connector for accepting a cable.Inter linkingA Network Interface Controller (NIC) is also called an Ethernet card is computer hardware device that connects a computer to a network with the capability to access the transmission media, and can process low-level network information. • NetworkRepeaters and HubsNetworkRepeaters and Hubs

A Repeaters is an electronic device that receives and an electronic signal and retransmit it. A repeater does not amplify the electric signal instead it just repeat it. It gives the electronic signals more strength to reach a wider area. In Computer Networking repeater are used to regenerate or replicate a signal. While Hubs are a computer networking device that is commonly used to connect point for devices in a network it also contains multiple ports like switch but less than it.

  • Modems

Modem is a short form of Modulator-Demodulator is a computer networking device that enables a computer to transmit data over cable lines or telephone. Some people can get confused between Modem and a Router there is some difference between both the devices, a router connects your other devices with WIFI while modem only connects you to the internet.

  • Firewalls

A firewall is a network device for controlling network security and access rules. Its use for security purpose of a network It monitors incoming and outgoing traffic. You can filter data packets with the firewall.Firewall is available both in physical and software form. There are multiple vendors out there in the market which develops firewalls but the most popular is Juniper firewalls. There are different types of firewalls such as Packet filter firewalls, stateful inspection firewalls, Proxy firewalls, and next-generation firewalls.
